The coverage manual
What Mercury Product Protection Platinum covers
Platinum is an extended service contract with Mercury Marine: parts and labor for a covered breakdown, done by any authorized Mercury dealer and approved by Mercury before the work starts. If a part isn't on the contract's list, it isn't covered.
It's the broader of Mercury's two plans. Gold covers the main mechanical parts; Platinum adds electrical, fuel, steering and trim.

Cylinder block and the internally lubricated parts inside it: heads, crankshaft, rods and bearings, pistons and rings, camshaft, valves, timing chain or belt, flywheel, oil pump, supercharger, manifolds and circulating water pump.
-
Wiring harness, starter and solenoid, alternator, voltage regulator, ignition coils, stator, ECU, sensors, EFI electrical parts, electronic throttle and shift, Mercury instruments and switches.
-
Fuel delivery pump, fuel injection pump, injectors, fuel cooler, compressor and manifold body.
-
Power steering cylinders and pumps, joystick controls, Mercury-supplied cables, helm, rack and yoke.
-
Trim pump and motor, cylinders, trim manifold, solenoid, limit switch, wiring and trim position sender. Seals and gaskets excluded.
-
Internally lubricated gears, shafts and bearings in the gearcase. The case itself, and the parts inside the driveshaft housing, when a covered part's breakdown damages them. Propellers excluded.
Your part
$50 per claim
The deductible is the same on Gold and Platinum, paid to the servicing dealer.
Keep up the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual and hang on to the records.
Included with every plan
- Coverage that doesn't decline: the last year covers the same parts as the first
- On-water towing, up to $200 per claim
- Haul-out, up to $200 per claim on boats 26 ft and longer
- Transfers to a new owner within 30 business days of the sale, for Mercury's fee
Not covered
- Routine maintenance, consumables and wear items such as impellers, spark plugs, seals and gaskets
- Propellers
- Accidents and impact damage, corrosion, overheating, freezing, bad fuel or submersion
- Commercial, rental or competition use, and engines modified from factory spec
- Breakdowns or repairs outside the US and Canada
Coverage starts going forward. Platinum covers breakdowns after the plan is in force. It can't cover a problem the engine already has, and Mercury decides each claim based on the cause of the failure.
How long you have to buy Mercury Product Protection
It must be purchased within your engine's standard Mercury Limited Warranty period.
For most recreational Mercury outboards that's 3 years, so the last day to buy is 36 months after the original registration date. A promotional warranty extension doesn't move that date, and once the window closes it never reopens. After the first year, Mercury adds a one-time late-enrollment fee per engine:
| Engine | Year 1months 1 to 12 | Year 2months 13 to 24 | Year 3months 25 to 36 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 75 hp | No fee | $35 | $60 |
| 75 hp and up | No fee | $125 | $225 |
After month 36 it can't be bought for that engine.

Questions about Mercury Product Protection
Can any Mercury dealer service a plan I bought online?
Yes. The plan is registered directly with Mercury Marine, so any of the 3,600+ authorized Mercury dealers in the United States can look it up and do covered repairs. It is the same contract a dealership sells.
When does Platinum coverage start and end?
It starts the day your Mercury limited warranty ends, which for most recreational outboards is 3 years after registration, and runs for the term you choose. The limited warranty and Product Protection together can't go past 8 years.
How long do I have to buy Mercury Product Protection?
Within your engine's standard Mercury limited warranty period. For most recreational outboards that's 36 months from the original registration date. After month 12, Mercury adds a one-time late-enrollment fee per engine: $35 under 75 hp or $125 at 75 hp and up in year 2, and $60 or $225 in year 3. We confirm the dates from the serial number.
Can I buy Mercury Product Protection after 3 years?
Not for most engines. Mercury sells it only during the standard limited warranty, which for most recreational outboards ends 36 months after registration, and a promotional warranty extension doesn't change that. Once the window closes it never reopens for that engine. Brunswick Passport Premier is a separate program that may still cover it in some situations: see the options past the window, or compare the two programs.
Can I buy coverage after a problem shows up?
No. Platinum covers breakdowns that happen after the plan is in force. It does not cover a condition that existed before you bought it, and Mercury approves every claim based on the cause of the failure.
Is there a deductible?
Yes. Gold and Platinum both carry a $50 deductible per claim, paid to the servicing dealer. A repeat failure of the same covered part is handled under Mercury's parts warranty, without the deductible.
Can I transfer it if I sell the boat?
Yes. The new owner submits Mercury's transfer form, a bill of sale and Mercury's transfer fee within 30 business days of the sale. Mercury may ask for an inspection first.
I already have Gold or Platinum. Can I add years or upgrade?
Usually, as long as your Mercury limited warranty is still active and the total stays within 8 years. Once the limited warranty has ended, existing Product Protection can't be extended. Upgrades and extensions are priced by serial number, so call or send a quote request.
Are Mercury Racing, 425 hp and up, or Avator outboards eligible?
Yes for 425, 500 and 600 hp outboards: they are priced in the calculator above and sold online like every other tier. The Mercury Racing models on Mercury's Racing rate chart (60R through 500R, and the 520 sterndrive) are eligible and have their own price list. Avator electric outboards are not eligible for Mercury Product Protection.
Why is your price lower than Mercury list?
We're an authorized Mercury dealer selling online at volume, so every tier is 20% or more below Mercury's list price. Call or send a quote request and we can often do better, especially on multi-engine boats. The contract, the coverage and the dealers who honor it are the same.
