What is the difference between a remote control motor and a tiller motor?

The new Mercury electric remote control motor is also available in a tiller configuration, and it’s important to understand which is right for your boat.

A tiller configuration uses a built-in handle that connects to the motor, allowing the helmsman to directly adjust the direction the motor and rudder is pointed. Speed is controlled by twisting the throttle one direction or another to speed up or slow down.

On the other hand, a remote control configuration resembles a car’s steering, with a steering wheel that controls direction along with a lever or dial to manage speed. These inputs are relayed by mechanical linkage or electronic inputs to steer the boat.

What are the advantages of a remote control outboard?

One of the greatest advantages of an electric remote control outboard is comfort. Manning a tiller motor requires the helmsman to angle their body back and to the side to properly grip the tiller, a position that can be awkward and uncomfortable for extended periods of time.

A remote control configuration, on the other hand, allows the boat’s helmsman to comfortably sit facing forward with the steering device directly in front of them. With its advanced transverse flux electric motor, the Avator generates 750 watts of energy at the prop, which is roughly equivalent to one horsepower. However, because the transverse flux motor of the Mercury electric outboard can generate instant torque even at lower RPMs, it is more efficient and delivers better performance.

This performance comes in a package that is quieter, weighs less, doesn’t create fumes, and can be easily transported by hand.
