What Is the Tiller Arm on an Outboard?
A tiller is a lever used to steer a boat, usually attached directly to an outboard motor. By pushing or pulling the tiller, the operator can steer left or right. On the Mercury Avator tiller motor, the tiller also doubles as a carrying handle, making it highly portable once disconnected from the boat.
A digital display next to the handle shows vital operating information such as range estimates and battery life.
Tiller vs. Remote-Control Motors
The Mercury Avator is available in both tiller and remote-control configurations. Choosing between them depends on your boating style and vessel type:
- Tiller Motors: Feature a built-in handle for direct steering. Speed is adjusted by twisting the throttle, making them compact, responsive, and easy to operate.
- Remote-Control Motors: Use a steering wheel and throttle lever, similar to a car. Inputs are transmitted to the motor for steering and speed adjustments, ideal for larger or console-equipped boats.
