Mercury Product Protection vs Passport Premier

Program Comparison

Mercury Product Protection vs
Brunswick Passport Premier

These two plans get compared as if you were choosing between them. Almost nobody is. For most Mercury owners only one of the two is actually available, and which one it is comes down to a single date. Here is how they differ, and how to tell which one applies to your engine.

The Short Version

You are usually not choosing

If you are eligible for both, buy Mercury

Mercury Product Protection is the factory program. It is administered by Mercury Marine, honored at more than 3,600 authorized Mercury dealers on genuine Mercury parts, carries no ceiling on total claims, and transfers with the boat. When your engine qualifies for it, that is the plan to buy, and we will say so even though we sell both.

The catch is that Mercury only sells it during a fixed window: 36 months from your engine's registration date, while the factory warranty is still active. After that the factory program is closed to your engine permanently. Brunswick Passport exists to cover engines on the other side of that line. It is not a competing choice so much as a second door that opens as the first one shuts.

So the honest way to read the comparison below is: find out which program your engine is eligible for, then read that column. If you do not know your registration date, we will look it up for free.

Side By Side

How the two programs differ

Mercury Product Protection Brunswick Passport Premier
Who administers it Mercury Marine. The factory program. Brunswick Product Protection Corporation, in Mercury's corporate family but a separate company. Insured by Virginia Surety.
When you can buy it Within 36 months of registration, while the factory warranty is active. A surcharge applies after month 12 and rises after month 24. Two lanes. If any manufacturer coverage is still running, anytime before it ends. If everything has expired, only when the boat changes hands through a dealer, engine nine model years or newer.
Deductible $50 per repair visit. $25 per covered gas engine repair.
Ceiling on total claims None stated. $15,000 in total claims as standard. Can be raised to $25,000 or $35,000 for an additional cost.
Transferable to a buyer Yes, for a small fee. A real resale advantage. Plans written while manufacturer coverage is still active transfer once. Pre-owned plans do not transfer at all.
Where repairs happen Any of 3,600 plus authorized Mercury dealers, genuine Mercury parts and labor. The selling dealer or any manufacturer-authorized repair facility. Parts reimbursed at suggested retail, labor at published flat-rate times.
How coverage is defined Platinum covers mechanical and electrical failure broadly. See Gold vs Platinum. A listed-component contract. The plan names what it covers and anything unnamed is excluded. Premier's list is far longer than base Passport's.
Road and water assistance Up to $200 on-water towing per occurrence. Service Assist, up to $125 per claim occurrence.
Engines it will cover Mercury and Mercury Racing only. Any brand of outboard meeting the eligibility rules, plus sterndrive, inboard and diesel. Modified engines and Avator electric are excluded.
How long it runs Up to 8 years total from registration, factory warranty included. Pre-owned runs 1 to 4 years. Plans written over live manufacturer coverage also reach 8 years total from the in-service date.

Reading The Differences

Which of these actually matter

The claim ceiling is the difference that can cost you

Mercury Product Protection states no cap on what it will pay across the life of the plan. Passport caps standard engine coverage at $15,000 in total claims. On a single mid-range outboard a $15,000 ceiling is generous, because most covered failures land well below it. On a large outboard, or a twin or triple rig, one powerhead can consume most of it. That is why we usually recommend raising the limit on bigger engines rather than taking the standard figure, and we will tell you what that costs when we quote.

Transferability is worth real money at resale

A Mercury plan moves to your buyer, which is a line you can put in the listing. A Passport pre-owned plan ends when you sell. If you expect to sell within a few years, weigh that. Plans written while manufacturer coverage is still running do transfer once, which is another reason that lane is the better one when you qualify for it.

Listed-component coverage means read the list

This is the biggest practical difference in how the two contracts behave. Mercury Platinum covers mechanical and electrical failure as a category. Passport names components, and if a part is not named it is not covered no matter how it failed. The base Passport level excludes overheating, detonation and sensor failures outright, which on a modern fuel-injected engine removes most of the expensive claims. Passport Premier puts all of those back. That is why we quote Premier by default and would rather talk you out of the base level than sell it to a supercharged Verado.

The deductible difference is small

Passport's $25 is half of Mercury's $50. Over the life of a plan that is a difference of a few tens of dollars. It is a genuine advantage and it is not a reason to choose anything.

Decide

Which one applies to you

Work down this list and stop at the first yes

  • Is your engine within 36 months of its registration date, with the factory warranty still active? Buy Mercury Product Protection. It is the better product and you are eligible. See the full price list.
  • Past 36 months, but factory, promotional, or Product Protection coverage is still running? Passport at new-engine rates, and you can arrange it now without buying or selling anything. This is the second-best position to be in and it has a deadline attached, because it has to be set up before your current coverage ends.
  • Everything expired, and you are buying a boat from a dealer? Passport pre-owned, arranged at or before delivery, engine nine model years or newer.
  • Everything expired, no boat changing hands? There is nothing available today. We will tell you that plainly and flag your next opportunity.

Common Questions

Program comparison FAQ

Which is better, Mercury Product Protection or Passport Premier?

For an engine eligible for both, Mercury Product Protection. It is the factory program, it has no stated ceiling on total claims, it is serviced across Mercury's own dealer network on genuine Mercury parts, and it transfers to a buyer. Passport Premier is the right plan when Mercury's window has closed, which is the situation most people asking this question are actually in.

Can I buy both?

There is no reason to. They cover the same engine against overlapping failures. If you are eligible for Mercury Product Protection, buy that one and stop.

Is Passport Premier a Mercury product?

No. It is administered by Brunswick Product Protection Corporation, which is in the same corporate family as Mercury Marine but is a separate company, and the contract is insured by Virginia Surety. Repairs are not restricted to Mercury dealers, and it is not the factory plan.

Why is the Passport deductible lower?

The two programs were priced independently by different administrators. The $25 deductible is real, but it is a minor factor next to the claim ceiling and the transferability rules, which is where the two plans genuinely diverge.

Does Passport cover the same components as Platinum?

Not identically. Passport Premier is close on the failures that matter most on a modern outboard, including overheating, detonation, sensors, the supercharger and the lower unit. Base Passport is considerably narrower and excludes overheating and sensor failures regardless of cause. Mercury Platinum defines coverage by category rather than by component list, so it does not have that gap at all.

How do I find out which one I qualify for?

Send us the engine serial number. We check the registration date, the factory warranty status, and any coverage already on the engine, then tell you which program applies and what it costs. Free, and there is no obligation.

One serial number settles it

Rather than work out which program fits, let us check the engine. We will tell you which one you qualify for, what it covers, and what it costs, usually within a business day.
