Mercury Gold vs Platinum Warranty

Coverage Compared

Mercury Warranty Levels:
Gold vs Platinum

Gold protects against mechanical failures. Platinum protects against mechanical and electrical failures. On a modern fuel-injected, digitally controlled outboard, that second word carries most of the repair bill risk.

Spelled Out

The Platinum-only list

The component groups Mercury's chart marks as Platinum-level coverage. If a part on this list fails outside your factory warranty and you hold Gold, the repair is yours to pay.

If it has a wire, it is Platinum

  • Electrical and ignition: alternator, voltage regulator, starter motor, ignition coils, ignition stator, CDM modules, switch boxes, rectifier, RPM limiter, engine sensors, solenoids, triggers and amplifiers, idle and advance modules, electronic boost control, ECU, electronic throttle control, warning horns, and the engine wiring harness.
  • Controls and instruments: remote controls, Digital Throttle and Shift, Axius and joystick piloting components, SmartCraft gauges and VesselView displays, analog gauges, throttle and shift cables, tiller handle, emergency stop switch, MerCathode, power shift components, and rigging.
  • Trim system electrics: trim solenoids, trim limit switch, trim position sender, and trim wiring.
  • Steering: power steering pump and joystick (JPO) systems.
  • Fuel system: most fuel-delivery components, including pumps and injectors.
  • Extra benefit: hoist and haul-out reimbursement, up to $200 on boats 26 feet and larger.

Why It Matters

The practical difference on a modern outboard

A carbureted two-stroke from 2005 was mostly mechanical. A current FourStroke or Verado is a computer that happens to burn gasoline: electronic throttle and shift, a dozen sensors, an ECU managing everything, SmartCraft gauges at the helm. When these engines come in for expensive non-routine work, it is disproportionately alternators, sensors, control modules, and wiring, precisely the systems Gold does not touch.

That is not a knock on Gold. On a simple tiller engine with pull start and no electronics, mechanical-only coverage covers most of what can fail. But for fuel-injected engines with digital controls, the electrical list is where the risk lives, and repairs there routinely run four figures once diagnosis and labor are counted. One covered ECU or alternator failure can return most of the price difference.

Common Questions

Gold vs Platinum FAQ

Can I upgrade from Gold to Platinum later?

Yes. Mercury allows Gold-to-Platinum upgrades while your coverage is active, priced by serial number based on your engine and remaining term. We quote upgrades the same business day.

Is the deductible different between Gold and Platinum?

No. Both levels carry the same $50 deductible per repair visit at any authorized Mercury dealer, with genuine Mercury parts and labor included on covered failures.

Does PowerBoatSupply.com sell Gold?

We quote Platinum for new enrollments because on modern fuel-injected engines the most expensive common failures are electrical, which Gold does not cover. If you hold Gold already, we can quote your upgrade to Platinum.

Are both plans transferable if I sell my boat?

Yes. Both Gold and Platinum transfer to the new owner, which typically increases resale value because the buyer inherits factory-backed coverage.
