What You Get Back

A verified answer, not a guess

Mercury does not publish warranty status online, so the only way to know for certain is to have an authorized dealer look up the engine in Mercury's system. That is what we do. Your reply covers three things:

Your lookup reply includes

  • Factory warranty status. Your registration date on file and when the Mercury Limited Warranty ends.
  • Existing coverage. Whether Gold or Platinum Product Protection is already attached to the engine, and through what date.
  • Your eligibility window. How many months remain to add Platinum, whether a late surcharge applies, and your exact price if you want it.
Already Know Your Registration Date?

Skip the wait: enter it in the eligibility calculator for an instant window check and price. The lookup is for owners who want the dates confirmed from Mercury's records.

Enter your serial number

We only use your serial number to check your own engine. Results go to the email you provide and nowhere else.

Second or third engine? Put every serial number in the serial field, separated by commas.

Finding It

Where your Mercury serial number is

On most Mercury outboards the serial number plate is on the transom bracket or swivel bracket, the part that clamps to the boat, on the starboard side. Older engines sometimes carry it on the engine block under the cowling. The number is also printed on your original sales paperwork and on the Mercury registration card if you kept it.

Mercury serial numbers on modern engines look like a digit, a letter, and six more digits, for example 3B462667 or 1R356412. Some older engines use a different format; send whatever is on the plate and we will work it out.

Why It Matters

The date that decides everything

Two clocks run from your engine's registration date, and both are invisible until someone looks them up. The price of Mercury Product Protection steps up after month 12. The ability to buy it at all ends at month 36, as long as the factory warranty is still active. Owners routinely discover the second clock after it has already run out, which is why a free lookup is worth two minutes.

The Hard Deadline

You can purchase Mercury Product Protection until 36 months after your engine's registration date, as long as your Mercury Limited Warranty is still active. After that window closes, this coverage can never be purchased for your engine.

Common Questions

Lookup FAQ

How do I check my Mercury outboard's warranty status?

Mercury does not offer a public warranty lookup. Warranty and Product Protection records live in Mercury's dealer system, so an authorized Mercury dealer has to look the engine up by serial number. Submit your serial above and we will check it for free, usually the same business day.

Can any Mercury dealer look up my engine?

Yes. Any authorized Mercury dealer can see registration and coverage records for a Mercury engine. We do it online for owners anywhere in the United States, with no obligation to buy anything.

What if my engine was bought from a different dealer?

It makes no difference. Mercury's records follow the engine, not the dealer. Most of the engines we look up were sold somewhere else.

Will you contact me about buying coverage?

Your reply includes your eligibility and, if you are still in the window, your price, because that is usually the question behind the question. There is no pressure and no follow-up campaign unless you ask for a quote.

What if my window has already closed?

We will say so plainly. Depending on your engine's warranty status, there may still be a coverage option through the Brunswick Passport program, and we will tell you if it applies.
