How Long Do You Have to Buy Mercury Product Protection
How Long Do You Have to Buy
Mercury Product Protection?
Short answer: 36 months from your engine's registration date, as long as the factory warranty is still active. The lowest price ends at month 12. Here is the whole timeline, with dates you can check against your own engine.
The Rule
The one sentence that matters
You can purchase Mercury Product Protection until 36 months after your engine's registration date, as long as your Mercury Limited Warranty is still active. After that window closes, this coverage can never be purchased for your engine.
That is the rule most owners never hear at the dealership. Product Protection is presented as an option at the time of sale, and when you decline it, nobody mentions that the option has an expiration date. Three years later the engine is out of factory warranty, a repair estimate arrives, and the coverage that would have handled it is no longer for sale at any price.
Two Clocks
Price and eligibility run on different timers
Both start on the same day, your registration date, but they end at different times. Confusing them is the most common mistake we see.
From your registration date
- Months 1 through 12: the lowest price. Mercury's base rate, and at PowerBoatSupply.com, 20 percent below Mercury list.
- Months 13 through 24: still eligible, small surcharge. A one-time $35 per engine under 75 hp, or $125 per engine at 75 hp and up.
- Months 25 through 36: the final window. The surcharge rises to $60 or $225 per engine. You are still fully eligible.
- Month 36 and beyond: closed. No surcharge, no exception, no late option. The coverage is simply no longer available for that engine.
The surcharge is real money, but it is small next to the coverage, so if you are in months 13 through 36 the sensible reaction is not regret. It is to enroll before the second clock runs out.
Worked Dates
Three engines, three timelines
Plug in your own registration date and the pattern is the same: add 12 months for the best-price cutoff, 36 months for the hard close.
| Registered | Lowest price through | Surcharge rises | Window closes | Where it stands today |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| March 10, 2026 | March 10, 2027 | March 10, 2028 | March 10, 2029 | Best price. Enroll now and nothing is added. |
| May 15, 2024 | May 15, 2025 | May 15, 2026 | May 15, 2027 | Final window. $225 surcharge on a 75 hp+ engine, fully eligible. |
| September 1, 2023 | September 1, 2024 | September 1, 2025 | September 1, 2026 | Days left. After September 1 this engine can never be covered. |
"Today" in the last column means late August 2026. Surcharge amounts shown are for engines 75 hp and up; under 75 hp they are $35 and $60.
The Start Line
What "registration date" actually means
The clock does not start when the engine was built, and not necessarily when you bought the boat. It starts on the date the selling dealer registered the engine with Mercury Marine, which is also the day the Mercury Limited Warranty began. For a new boat that is usually the delivery date. For an engine that sat in dealer inventory, registration can be months after manufacture. For a used boat, it is whenever the first owner took delivery, which may be well before you ever saw the boat.
You can find the date on the Mercury registration card or warranty paperwork from the original sale. If you do not have it, any authorized Mercury dealer can pull it from your serial number, and we will do it for free: request a warranty lookup.
The Fine Print
Three conditions people miss
The factory warranty has to be active
The 36-month window assumes the Mercury Limited Warranty is still in force, which it normally is, since most Mercury outboards carry three years of factory coverage. If your factory coverage ended early for any reason, the purchase window ends with it.
Promotional coverage does not extend the window
Mercury periodically sells engines with promotional extended coverage attached, four or five years instead of three. That coverage is a real benefit, but it does not push the Product Protection purchase deadline past month 36. If your factory or promotional coverage runs past the window, other programs may apply to your engine, and a lookup will tell you.
Mercury Racing engines are quoted separately
Racing models (60R through 500R) are eligible for Platinum coverage but are priced as quotes rather than from the standard chart. The same 36-month window applies. Call us with the serial number.
After 36 Months
What happens when the window closes
Nothing dramatic, which is the problem. The engine keeps running, the factory warranty expires on schedule, and the next significant repair is yours to pay in full. Mercury will not sell Product Protection for that engine at any price, to anyone, ever again. There is no late fee, no appeal, and no reinstatement.
If you are reading this after your window has closed, we will still tell you where you stand. Depending on your engine's coverage status there may be an option through a separate program, and the honest answer is that sometimes there is not. A lookup settles it in a business day.
Common Questions
Deadline FAQ
Can I buy Mercury Product Protection after 3 years?
No. The purchase window closes 36 months after the engine's registration date, provided the factory warranty was still active until then. After that, Product Protection cannot be purchased for the engine under any circumstances.
Does the window start at purchase or at registration?
At registration, the date the selling dealer registered the engine with Mercury. For most new boats that is the delivery date, but for engines that sat in inventory, or boats bought used, the two dates can differ by months or years.
I bought my boat used. Am I still eligible?
Eligibility follows the engine, not the owner. If the engine is within 36 months of its original registration and the factory warranty is active, you can buy Product Protection as the new owner. Many used-boat buyers are surprised to learn they still have time.
Does a promotional extended warranty change the deadline?
No. Promotional coverage extends your factory protection but does not move the Product Protection purchase deadline, which stays at 36 months from registration.
Is there any grace period after month 36?
No. Mercury's eligibility rule is applied by date, with no grace period and no exception process. If your window closes on the 15th, an application on the 16th is declined.
