02When to buy

When you can buy it: 36 months from registration

The Mercury Racing limited warranty runs 3 years, the same as a standard Mercury outboard, so the same deadline applies: you can buy Platinum until 36 months after your engine's registration date, while that warranty is active. The first 12 months carry the lowest price.

The late-enrollment fee

From month 13, Mercury adds a one-time fee per engine (its contract calls it a surcharge). The 60R pays the under-75 hp amount; every other Racing model pays the 75 hp and up amount.

Which Mercury Racing engines qualify

Mercury's Platinum contract covers select Mercury Racing models: the nine on Mercury's Racing rate chart.

A Mercury Racing engine qualifies. Racing it doesn't.

Mercury Racing is the engine's brand, not how it's used. A model on Mercury's Racing rate chart that's used for pleasure boating is eligible for Platinum. Mercury's contract excludes competition use, the same way it excludes commercial and rental use.

Mercury Racing products that aren't on the chart can't be covered, and coverage must be bought for every engine on the boat. The full list of requirements is on the Mercury Product Protection page.

How much does Mercury Product Protection cost for a Mercury 400R?

Between $3,413 and $13,140 at Mercury list price, depending on the coverage term. At PowerBoatSupply.com the same plans run $2,901.05 to $11,169.00, 15% below list. The 5-year plan protects a 400R into year 8 from registration.

Which Mercury Racing engines can get Platinum?

The models on Mercury's Racing rate chart: the 60R, 150R, 200R, 250R, 300R, 400R, 450R and 500R outboards, and the 520 sterndrive. Other Mercury Racing products can't be covered.

How long do I have to buy it for a Mercury Racing engine?

The same as any Mercury outboard: until 36 months after the engine's registration date, while its 3-year Mercury Racing limited warranty is active. Buy in the first 12 months for the lowest price; from month 13 a one-time late-enrollment fee applies.

Does a Mercury Racing engine count as racing use?

Can I transfer it if I sell the boat?

Yes. The new owner submits Mercury's transfer form, a bill of sale and Mercury's transfer fee within 30 business days of the sale. Mercury may ask for an inspection first.

Do these prices include the late-enrollment fee?

No. If your engine was registered 13 to 36 months ago, Mercury adds a one-time fee per engine: $35 or $60 on the 60R, and $125 or $225 on every other model, depending on timing.

My Racing engine is past 3 years. What are my options?

Mercury Product Protection can no longer be bought once the window closes, but Brunswick's Passport Premier plan can cover factory Mercury Racing models that haven't been modified. See your options after the Mercury warranty expires.
