Mercury Portable Tiller Motors (2.5 - 25HP)

A compact outboard tiller motor from Mercury Marine is the perfect way to power a small boat. With options ranging from 2.5 to 25 HP, Mercury Marine outboard tiller motors come in a variety of configurations to meet the needs of any boater, backed by nearly a century of design expertise.

The difference between tiller and remote outboard motors

The key difference between remote outboard motors and tiller motors is in their method of control. Remote motors use linkage cables to transmit input from the boat’s driver to the engine. Outboard tiller motors, on the other hand, feature a physical handle that the driver uses to steer the boat directly.

The greatest advantage of a Mercury tiller outboard motor is that it is lightweight and reliable, making it ideal for small fishing and recreational boats.

How to start a Mercury outboard tiller motor

For most modern Mercury Marine outboard tiller motors, starting the engine is as simple as tilting the motor down into the water and turning the key, much like starting a car. Older carbureted two-stroke models may require additional steps. For these, tilt the engine so fuel can reach the carburetor, then squeeze the fuel pump’s primer bulb until it is firm. While in neutral, advance the throttle to about two-thirds, then turn the key while pushing to choke and crank at the same time. Once the engine starts, release the choke and return to neutral.

How to break in a new Mercury tiller outboard motor

While it may be tempting to push a new Mercury tiller outboard motor to the limit, doing so can damage the motor and affect fuel efficiency. To break in a new motor properly, follow the instructions in your owner’s manual. First, allow the motor to warm up to operating temperature. Then, for the next two hours, vary the motor’s RPMs between idle and about 4500 RPMs. Every ten minutes, run the motor at wide-open throttle briefly to expose it to different operating conditions. After the initial two hours, you can operate the motor normally but avoid running at wide-open throttle for more than five minutes at a time during the next ten hours of use.

For nearly four decades, PowerBoatSupply.com has been supplying customers with the best in Mercury outboard motors. If tiller outboard motors aren’t the right fit, we also offer a full range of Mercury remote outboard motors, as well as outboard motors over 30 horsepower for those who need more power.
